Bordered by the legendary Mississippi River ("Mississippi" comes from several American Indian words meaning "Father of Waters"), this state is full of beauty, history, and tradition, letting visitors relive the grandeur of the Old South. It also boasts a highway more than 8,000 years old – the Natchez Trace Parkway. Mississippi has a long literary tradition; the town of Oxford was home to writer William Faulkner and suspense novelist John Grisham. Award-winning authors Richard Wright and Eudora Welty also used Mississippi as the basis for their work, and playwrightTennessee Williams and puppet master Jim Henson honed their creativity in the state.
